The plot is pure Trek: An energy cloud housing a living machine is headed for Earth, destroying everything in its wake. The ponderous pacing and pure 70s-ness of the costumes makes The Motion Picture a slog, but at least it’s a spectacular slog.
Walter Koenig, Leonard Nimoy, William Shatner, Majel Barrett, James Doohan, DeForest Kelley, Persis Khambatta, George Takei, Stephen Collins, Nichelle Nichols, and Grace Lee Whitney in Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) (Image credit: Paramount Pictures) At no point is a viewer not acutely aware that this movie had to happen to get Spock back on the Enterprise, and it almost isn’t worth it. You could generously call it an homage to Trek’s humble beginnings, but it’s very strange after the lush visuals of Khan. Also, the entire film looks bizarrely cheap.
Thus begins a “how do we get Spock’s consciousness back into his newly reborn body” reverse-heist film that is crammed full with awkward moments. After his sacrifice saves the Enterprise from certain destruction, Spock’s casket is shot into space, eventually settling on the Genesis planet.
On the plus side, it has Christopher Lloyd as a Klingon. Vishnu shoots an arrow through Raghu's heart, but Raghu throws him to the ground and burns him. Raghu appears on the day of Dussera, when Vishnu arrives to burn Ravana's idol, and begins thrashing all the goons. He pays a visit to Zoya's grave and swears vengeance on Vishnu. Raghu, on the other hand, murders and buryes them all.
Meanwhile, Vishnu kills his father violently and sends goons to kill Raghu. Raghu becomes depressed and damaged in prison. Raghu, who is distraught, is arrested for Zoya's murder. Zoya hands the gun to Raghu, rests her thumb over his, pulls the trigger, and dies in his arms. Raghu is told by Zoya to kill her so that he and the children will be protected. Vishnu's father assures Raghu that if he kills only Zoya, he and the kids will be safe. When Zoya becomes an eye witness to a murder by Vishnu, Anna instructs Raghu to kill Zoya, oblivious to the fact that Raghu loves her. Vishnu seizes the opportunity to disgrace his father's favorite goon when Raghu falls for Zoya, a mute musically minded Kashmiri girl who teaches youngsters music. Anna's reliance on Raghu irritates Vishnu (Anna's son), whose issues stem from more than simply his diminutive size (he is barely three feet tall). Raghu is a goon for the local gangster Narayan Anna, who runs the Mumbai water mafia.
